Sort JSON Keys
Sort and alphabetize JSON keys recursively (A-Z or Z-A) with priority keys, natural number collation, and format options.
Paste any JSON payload or array. All sorting happens securely in your browser.
Sort & Alphabetize JSON Object Keys Instantly
When comparing two JSON configurations or committing API fixtures to version control, random key ordering can produce noisy, unreadable git diffs. ToolShed's Sort JSON Keys utility recursively sorts keys across your entire JSON hierarchy alphabetically (A→Z or Z→A), ensuring consistent, deterministic structure.
Whether you need to float primary identifiers like id and name to the top, sort numbered keys using natural collation (step2 before step10), or reorder arrays of tags, everything runs locally in your browser with zero latency.
Key Capabilities
Recursive Deep Sorting
Sort keys at every level of nested objects and within arrays of objects, or limit sorting to the root object.
Priority Key Placement
Keep primary keys like id, _id, or name anchored at the top of every object while alphabetizing the remaining fields.
Natural Collation
Sort embedded numbers naturally (prop1, prop2, prop10) instead of standard lexicographical order (prop1, prop10, prop2).
Primitive Array Sorting
Optionally sort lists of tags, numbers, or identifiers within arrays alongside object keys.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why should I sort JSON object keys?
- Sorting JSON keys alphabetically makes API payloads, configuration files, and database records deterministic and easier to read. It simplifies git diffs by eliminating false changes caused by key reordering, and ensures predictable key order across different systems.
- Does it sort nested objects and arrays of objects?
- Yes. With "Recursive Deep Sort" enabled (default), every object key at every level of nesting is sorted alphabetically, including objects located inside arrays.
- Can I keep primary identifiers like "id" or "name" at the top?
- Yes. Enter your preferred keys into the "Priority Keys" field (e.g., "id, name, status"). Those keys will appear first in the resulting object, followed by the remaining keys sorted alphabetically.
- What is Natural Collation?
- Natural collation sorts numbers inside strings logically rather than purely lexically. For example, "item2" will be placed before "item10" (in standard alphabetical sorting, "item10" precedes "item2").
- Can this tool sort primitive array values (like strings or numbers)?
- Yes. Check the "Sort Primitive Arrays" option to also sort arrays containing strings or numbers (e.g. tag lists or IDs) in ascending or descending order.
- Is my JSON uploaded to any server?
- No. All sorting, reordering, and formatting happens 100% client-side in your web browser. Your private API keys, proprietary payloads, and sensitive configurations never leave your machine.
